There’s something about autumn that naturally changes the way we think about home. As the evenings become darker and the temperature drops, we start to notice the spaces around us a little more - where we sit, where we gather and the small comforts that make staying in feel good.
You don’t need to completely change your interiors for the new season. Often, a few thoughtful additions - richer colour, natural texture and softer layers - are enough to give a room a warmer, more inviting feel.
Here are a few simple ways to bring a little autumn into your home.
1. Introduce Warmer Colours
Autumn doesn't have to mean orange and brown. Think instead about the colours you naturally find outside as the season changes - deep greens, muted reds, aubergine, navy and warm neutrals. You can introduce these shades in small ways through a rug, pouffe, cushions or table linens. A little colour can go a long way.
2. Create a Corner to Retreat To
As the evenings draw in, we naturally spend more time in our favourite corners of the home. Make the most of one by adding a comfortable rug and a pouffe, perhaps alongside a favourite chair and a small table. It doesn't need to be a dedicated reading nook. It could simply be somewhere to put your feet up at the end of the day.
3. Bring Texture to the Table
The kitchen table becomes even more important in autumn - somewhere for slow breakfasts, weekend lunches and suppers that stretch into the evening.
Woven placemats, natural fibres and warm-toned pieces add texture without making the table feel overly styled. The beauty is in using pieces that work just as well for an everyday meal as they do when friends come over.
4. Bring in Some Warmth
A rug can completely change the feeling of a room. As we move into cooler months, a woven rug adds warmth underfoot while bringing texture and colour into the space.
Look to deeper blues, earthy greens, warm reds and natural tones for an autumnal feel that works beyond the season. In a living room, layer a rug beneath the coffee table or sofa; in the hallway, a runner can add warmth to an otherwise overlooked space.
5. Make Space for the Everyday
Autumn is a good time to think about the things that tend to gather around the home. A basket by the sofa for blankets, one in the hallway for everyday essentials or a smaller one for books can make a space feel calmer while adding another layer of natural texture.
You don’t need to reinvent your home for a new season. A few thoughtful changes - a deeper colour here, a softer layer there, somewhere comfortable to sit - can make all the difference as the days get shorter.
