Runner Rugs: A Softer Solution for Hard Floors

Runner rugs usually end up in the busiest parts of the home, such as hallways, kitchens, landings, and those narrow stretches where people are constantly passing through. So, it’s less about decoration and more about whether they can actually handle daily movement.

At The Braided Rug Company, we offer two types of runners: jute and wool mix.

Jute runners have more texture and structure to them. They sit quite firmly on the floor and feel steady underfoot. Some people worry jute might feel rough, but in a hallway or walkway it’s actually less noticeable than you’d think. After all, you’re not standing still on it, you’re just moving across it throughout the day, with shoes or slippers on. Plus, you might be surprised to know that they’re really quite soft, but maybe not as much as wool.
Wool runners feel softer straight away. There’s a bit more give underfoot, which makes them nice in colder months or if you prefer something that feels a bit more cushioned as you walk through the space. They still cope well with regular use, they just feel a bit gentler.

One of the biggest concerns with runner rugs is whether they’ll slide around. In most homes, heavier natural fibre rugs tend to stay put better than lighter synthetic ones, especially once they’ve settled into place. It’s not something you constantly have to keep fixing.

Some people worry a runner rug will make a narrow space feel even smaller. It usually doesn’t. It actually breaks up that long strip of bare flooring, so it doesn’t feel like one long corridor.

And if you’ve got hard floors, runners can also help take the edge off noise, especially in homes where footsteps tend to echo.

    FAQs: Runners

Q: How do I decide between jute and wool mix runners?

A: It usually comes down to how the space is used and what you want to spend. Jute runners are generally more budget-friendly and work well in busy areas like hallways or kitchens where durability matters more than softness. Wool runners usually cost a bit more, but they feel softer and more comfortable underfoot, which suits quieter spaces or places where you walk barefoot more often. So, it really depends on whether you’re prioritising practicality and price, or a bit more comfort day to day.

Q: Can I use a runner in a kitchen as well as a hallway?

A: Yes, lots of people do. Kitchens just tend to need a bit more regular cleaning depending on how much foot traffic and spill risk there is.

Q: Can I use a runner rug in a hallway with underfloor heating?

A: Yes, most natural fibre runners are fine with underfloor heating, but it’s always best to avoid very high temperatures to help the fibres last longer.
